Lütje Hörn

Lütje Hörn is a very small dune island (0.2 square km) in the Lower Saxony Waddensea National Park (German Bight). It is located east of Borkum island in the German Bight. Lütje Hörn is older than Mellum and Memmert (400 yrs), but it was inundated more often in the last 50 years.

Dune succession reached the stage of young white dunes with a maximum height of 1.5 m. The island has become smaller and smaller the last years and may disappear totally in the next few years.

Lütje Hörn island was object of a research project (in 1989 and 1990) carried out by the AG Terrestrial Ecology of the University Oldenburg/Nds. Results for spiders and carabids can be found in Plaisier & Schultz (1991).
